Extended Health Care
Extended Health Care (EHC)—also known as Supplementary Health Insurance—is additional insurance that covers medical expenses not included in your government health plan (like OHIP in Ontario).

What Does Extended Health Care Cover?

1. Prescription Drugs
• Covers medications not paid for by your provincial plan.

2. Dental & VisonCare (sometimes included)
• Preventive care, fillings, extractions, and more (depends on plan).
• Eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses.

3. Paramedical Services
• Services like:
• Massage therapy
• Physiotherapy
• Chiropractor
• Acupuncture
• Psychologists or therapists
4. Medical Equipment & Supplies
• Wheelchairs, crutches, orthotics, etc.

5. Emergency Travel Medical
• Coverage for health emergencies while traveling outside your province or country.

6. Private or Semi-Private Hospital Rooms
• Upgrades beyond standard ward rooms during hospital stays.
Why It’s Important:
While provincial plans cover basic health care, extended health plans protect you from out-of-pocket costs for day-to-day health and wellness services—especially important for families, seniors, and self-employed individuals.
